A New Chapter Among 180-Year-Old Vines

A New Chapter Among 180-Year-Old Vines in Pokolbin

Nestled in Pokolbin, an easy two-hour drive north of Sydney, the newly consolidated 68-hectare estate is home to some of Australia’s oldest vines, producing quintessential Hunter Valley varietals like Shiraz, Semillon, and Chardonnay. This rich heritage won’t just be preserved—it will be celebrated. Winemaking will continue on-site, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the authentic atmosphere of a working winery while enjoying sumptuous five-star facilities.

Brian McGuigan—Hunter Valley winemaking icon and former owner of Ben Ean—has long dreamt of creating a luxury destination in this part of the valley. Having purchased Ben Ean (formerly known as Lindeman’s) from Treasury Wines in 2017 alongside the adjacent Drayton property, Mr McGuigan and his partner Col Peterson dedicated themselves to maintaining the century-old vines and renovating the heritage winery. Now, with the backing of HVL Hotels, that dream is set to flourish in spectacular style.

“It’s a fantastic old vineyard that we’ve maintained, and we’ve done a tremendous amount of work on the old winery itself,” Mr McGuigan says, joking that the gnarled vines remind him of himself. “They’re old and gnarled—a bit like me.”

The Height of Luxury: Hotel Highlights

The new Hunter Valley resort is designed to take advantage of its picturesque surroundings, promising panoramic views across the vineyards and towards the imposing Broken Back Ridge. Set to open in summer 2026, the hotel aims to offer:

  • 65 bespoke guest rooms and suites with private balconies
  • wedding and function centre ideal for unforgettable celebrations
  • 25-metre swimming pool for leisurely laps or sun-soaked relaxation
  • rejuvenation spa and gym, providing holistic wellness experiences
  • World-class food and beverage outlets helmed by leading restaurateur Justin North

The resort’s architecture and landscaping will embrace the unique contours of the land. One of the estate’s most striking features is a sharp ridge, affording sweeping views in every direction—a “crowning glory,” as Mr McGuigan affectionately describes it.

Breathing New Life into the Hunter Valley

With no major new hotel built in the Hunter Valley for over 17 years, many locals and visitors alike agree it’s time for a fresh injection of five-star glamour. Dominic Lambrinos, HVL Hotels’ Managing Director (and former CEO of Chifley Securities), recognises that proximity to major population centres such as Newcastle, the Central Coast, and Sydneypositions Pokolbin as the perfect getaway destination.

“We believe there is a strong demand for a five-star plus hotel in the region,” says Mr Lambrinos. “We have received approval for the development of the hotel and some commercial facilities and expect them to open in the summer of 2026.”

Powered by Expertise

Under the leadership of Chairman Dr John Hewson (former Liberal Party leader), HVL Hotels is assembling a first-class team. Respected wine professionals Brian McGuiganCol Peterson, and Jon Osbeiston will ensure the resort honours the region’s winemaking tradition. Meanwhile, David Assef, formerly Managing Director of Spicers Retreats, will oversee hotel operations to guarantee guests receive top-tier service.

To add a uniquely artistic twist, the resort will showcase bespoke artworks by acclaimed artists Gillie and Marc Schattner, renowned for their whimsical bronze rabbit and dog sculptures that enliven corners of Sydney’s eastern suburbs.
