Mega Creatures Roam Again: Prehistoric Fun Returns to Hunter Valley Gardens

Long before vineyards flourished and wine lovers flocked to its picturesque landscapes, the Hunter Valley was a land shaped by ancient volcanoes and roamed by awe-inspiring dinosaurs. Each year during the April school holidays, Hunter Valley Gardens pays homage to this intriguing prehistoric past by transforming its spectacular grounds into a thrilling playground filled with larger-than-life dinosaurs, mythical creatures, and interactive adventures. From Saturday, 5 April to Sunday, 4 May 2025, the acclaimed Mega Creatures and Mega Creatures Night Safari return, promising excitement and wonder for visitors of all ages.

Now celebrating its tenth successful year, the Mega Creatures event has become a much-loved family tradition, offering something fresh and exhilarating every season. Spread across the garden’s lush, manicured landscapes—boasting over 6,000 trees and 600,000 shrubs—the event is both an educational journey and a fantasy-filled escapade.

This year sees exciting new additions to the extensive lineup of animatronic creatures. Among the latest prehistoric inhabitants are the gentle Maiasaura, aptly named the “good mother lizard,” which nurtured its young in Montana millions of years ago, and the striking Caudipteryx, a fascinating feathered dinosaur originating from Asia.

Complementing these historical marvels, Hunter Valley Gardens introduces the all-new Land of Legends. Here, mythology and fantasy collide, featuring dazzling models of creatures steeped in lore and legend. Explore a world guarded by Cerberus, the formidable three-headed canine guardian of the underworld, or watch as the legendary Phoenix dramatically rises from its ashes. Visitors can also marvel at Pegasus, the iconic winged stallion from Greek myths, and Griffin, the majestic creature with the body of a lion and the powerful wings and talons of an eagle.

As day transitions into twilight, Hunter Valley Gardens transforms dramatically. The Mega Creatures Night Safari invites visitors to experience a nocturnal adventure unlike any other, where shadows dance, and the sounds of the garden lend a sense of thrilling realism to the experience. Illuminated pathways wind past hauntingly lifelike animatronics, their subtle movements and startling realism delighting young and old alike.

One of the standout attractions at the event is the interactive fossil dig, designed to engage curious minds and aspiring palaeontologists. Participants can dig up replica fossils and learn fascinating dinosaur facts, deepening their appreciation of these ancient creatures and the science behind their discovery.

Entertainment doesn’t stop at dinosaurs. Thrill-seekers and families alike will find plenty to do with the garden’s array of amusement rides, from the exhilarating 35-metre Superslide to the dizzying delights of the Tea Cup ride. A gentle whirl on the beautifully crafted Venetian Carousel or panoramic views from atop the Giant Ferris Wheel provide serene alternatives for visitors of all tastes.

Adding a uniquely educational dimension to the festivities, internationally acclaimed puppetry group Erth returns with their popular Roving Baby Dinosaurs. Children will be charmed and fascinated by these interactive experiences, which include close encounters with a newly featured creature, “Leaellyn’s lizard,” a small Australian herbivorous dinosaur dating back approximately 118 million years.

Easter weekend adds yet another layer of excitement to the event. From 18 to 21 April, families can join in the Giant Easter Egg Hunt, searching for thousands of brightly coloured eggs scattered throughout the gardens. The Easter Bunny himself makes special appearances, providing perfect photo opportunities and adding to the festive atmosphere.
